Steve McNamara named Coach of the Month

Catalans Dragons Head Coach Steve McNamara has been named July’s Betfred Coach of the Month.

It is the second time McNamara has won the award after being named Coach of the Month in May.

McNamara’s Catalans side have enjoyed another unbeaten run in July, winning all four of their matches, maintaining their position at the top of the Betfred Super League table. The Dragons’ free flowing attack was at its best in July – they scored on average over 31 points per game across their four fixtures. McNamara has earned huge plaudits for his squad’s progress in 2021, finding a perfect balance between experienced campaigners and young & exciting talent - all whilst maintaining Catalans French flair and identity within his side.

Alongside their eye-catching attack, the Dragons have found a winning formula and an ability to grind down their opponent’s week after week. After home and away wins against the Rhinos which saw McNamara’s side fight their way back from half-time deficits on both occasions, they toppled a rejuvenated Hull KR team to maintain their unbeaten month. July concluded with a convincing home win against Wakefield Trinity in front of the Catalans faithful.

Discussing Steve McNamara’s side in July, a member of the voting panel said: “Although they’ve had a few home games in there to limit the travel, the fact they’ve stayed so consistent and been so successful deserves ample credit for Steve.

“The way he has moulded Josh Drinkwater into such an attacking weapon deserves credit, yes he’s put him alongside top players like Maloney and Sam Tomkins, but Drinkwater has really put his stamp on the team and McNamara has also utilised Arthur Mourgue in a good way – the introductions at hooker are a smart move and getting him in and around the team without upsetting the balance.”

Commenting on receiving the award, Steve McNamara explained: “All the staff and players deserve huge credit for their performances in July. We have prepared thoroughly and despite some tough moments in games that preparation put us in a position where we could overcome them. It has been a very good month for us.”
