2017 Super League fixtures announced

The Betfred Super League fixtures for 2017 have been released today, with each of the twelve clubs discovering who they will face at key points throughout the season.

Following one of the most exciting seasons in Super League history in 2016, which saw Wigan Warriors win the Grand Final in front of more than 70,000 fans at Old Trafford in Manchester, Warrington Wolves win the League Leaders Shield on the last day of the regular season and a £1M Game that saw Salford Red Devils retain their Betfred Super League status with a golden point drop goal and two tries in the last 90 seconds of their season, fans of all clubs today found out their club’s fixtures for the 2017 season.

Wigan Warriors will begin the defence of their title with an away fixture against £1M Game winners the Salford Red Devils on Saturday February 11 and Warrington Wolves, Super League runners-up following their League Leaders Shield win in 2016, begin their 2017 season with a game away against the Catalans Dragons on the same day, that game will be shown live on Sky Sports. 2016 Ladbrokes Challenge Cup winners Hull FC will take on Wakefield Trinity in one of two fixtures staged the following day on Sunday February 7.

Elsewhere on the opening weekend of the season, St Helens take on Leeds Rhinos in the first game of the year on Thursday February 9 live on Sky Sports. The TV cameras will also be present the following day when Castleford Tigers host the newly promoted Leigh Centurions live on February 10. Widnes Vikings will begin their campaign at home when they take on the Huddersfield Giants on the same night.

Super League General Manager, Mark Foster, said“2016 was one of the most exciting years ever for Super League and the release of these fixtures will hopefully excite Rugby League fans up and down the country. The new league structure is now into its third year and it gives every team the opportunity to achieve their goals, be that winning the Grand Final or survival in the Super League.

“There is so much to look forward to in 2017 for Betfred Super League fans. We have two top teams from the NRL coming over to battle our top clubs in the Dacia World Club Series, a return to Newcastle for the Dacia Magic Weekend in May, Leigh returning to the Super League bringing back local derbies against the likes of Wigan, St Helens and Salford and incredible winner takes all matches in the £1M Game and Betfred Super League Grand Final.”

In order to best prepare the England national team for the 2017 World Cup, the Betfred Super League clubs have agreed to an international pre-season training camp and an international break and there will now be a Betfred Super League double header at the end of May, with clubs playing twice across the second Bank Holiday weekend that month.

Newly promoted Leigh Centurions don’t have long to wait before their first visit to local rivals Wigan in 2017, as they travel to play champions the Super League champions in Round Three of the competition. Other highlights in the domestic fixture schedule include a highly anticipated Easter weekend packed with local derbies including Wigan Warriors v St Helens, Castleford Tigers v Wakefield Trinity and the derby between Widnes Vikings and Warrington Wolves, with all three games also featuring live on Sky Sports.

The Dacia Magic Weekend 2017 will once again take place at St James’ Park, Newcastle, where six Betfred Super League fixtures will be played on Saturday May 20 and Sunday May 21, including a rematch of the 2016 Super League Grand Final between Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves.

After all 23 rounds of the regular season, the Betfred Super League and the 12-team Kingstone Press Championship will once again split into three separate leagues, the Super 8s, the Qualifiers and Championship Shield. The pick of the action will be screened by the Super League’s main broadcast partner, Sky Sports, who will once again televise around 100 Rugby League games in 2017. The league will also have a new title partner, Betfred.

Speaking about these partnerships, Super League General Manager, Mark Foster, continued: “I am absolutely delighted to welcome Betfred as the new title partner of the Super League. They are clearly big Rugby League fans and I am certain that their first year involved in the League will be a memorable one.  I am also very pleased that our main broadcast partner Sky Sports will once again be capturing all the drama and excitement of the 2017 season. I am sure they will continue to do a brilliant job of covering the sport.”
