Damien Cardace scored a second-half hat-trick as a Scott Dureau-inspired Catalans Dragons hammered Wakefield Trinity Wildcats 40-4 to record their first victory on the road in First Utility Super League XX.

The Dragons had lost all three of their away matches heading into Thursday night's contest at Belle Vue Stadium but got off the mark in stunning style with their biggest-ever win over the Wildcats.

Injury-hit Wakefield were boosted by the return of captain Danny Kirmond and key half-backs Tim Smith and Jacob Miller, but they were powerless to stop the powerful Dragons in a first half to forget for the Wildcats.

Benjamin Garcia's first try of the season took the wind out of Wakefield's sails after a bright start by the hosts and further scores from Willie Tonga, Ben Pomeroy and Elliott Whitehead ended the game as a contest before half-time.

Dureau kicked five from five in the opening 40 minutes and he laid on two tries for Cardace as his faultless performance continued after the break.

The Dragons winger completed his treble in the closing stages as Catalans eased to their first win at Wakefield since 2011, with Chris Riley's try on the hooter little consolation for the Wildcats.

Wakefield did all the running in the opening 10 minutes but it was Catalans who had first sight of the tryline as Dureau dummied his way through, only to see Cardace ground his pass.

Birthday boy Mickael Simon was forced off after a big hit by former Dragons team-mate Jason Baitieri and his evening got worse soon after as his old team went in for the first try of the night.

Mathias Pala's break took Catalans upfield and the French outfit scored on the next play when Garcia took Ian Henderson's drop-off and powered his way over the line.

The Dragons were playing with confidence and stretched their lead on a last-tackle play which saw the ball move through the hands of Dureau and Thomas Bosc before Zeb Taia fed Tonga to score.

Wakefield were struggling to make ground in attack and their desperation to get moving forward led to Catalans' next try. The Wildcats tried to force a pass which was not on near their own line and Pomeroy gratefully kicked the loose ball ahead before touching down.
Dureau was successful with all three conversions and he made it eight points from his boot after Wakefield were penalised for offside.

The Wildcats had opportunities to reduce the deficit as half-time approached but Whitehead put the match out of their reach as he barged over in the corner after Catalans had kept the ball alive.

The interval did little to halt the Dragons' momentum as Cardace spectacularly finished off Dureau's neat dab through five minutes into the second half.

Catalans had conceded 161 points in their previous four matches but they were proving hard to break down on their own line and showed Wakefield how to cross the whitewash on their next venture upfield.

The peerless Dureau was again the creator, with his long pass allowing Cardace to race down the wing for his second try.

Cardace completed his hat-trick when he took Bosc's pass and left tired Wakefield defenders in his wake, although it was the Wildcats who had the last word through Riley after good work by Ali Lauitiiti.
